CHAPTER 13

It was only a short flight from the waterfall to the hills where the goldenheart grew. Raen flew in low, following the contours of the landscape. His tiny little human mate rode on his back, her small warmth perched between his shoulders.

She grumbled softly as they flew—something about the soreness of her rear end—and Raen smirked to himself.

His atma rode well, however. As well as the most seasoned of dragonriders. She showed no signs of fear as he swooped low over the hills and valleys. Her tiny heart thumped fast against his spine, but Raen sensed that was from excitement more than fear.

He admired his atma’s courage.

Ultimately, that is what had convinced him to give in to her pleas.

When she had spoken of her friends earlier, he was impressed by her utter selflessness. She would do whatever it took to help her companions, even if that meant risking life and limb.

Raen could not punish that sort of courage.

No, he must reward it. Nurture it.

It was exactly the kind of courage a dragon wished for in a mate. She would make an amazing brood mother. Fierce, fearless, and quick to defend the ones she loved.

She would be perfect.

He could not wait to see her belly rounded with the fruit of his cock.

And Goddess, how her soft little body affected him. His mating appendage had been in a constant state of pain ever since yesterday when he had examined her luscious curves and fragrant crevices.

Now she was dressed again in her clothing of animal skins. Raen had grudgingly allowed her to wear it again. It was merely a precaution. If they encountered anyone else on their way—human or dragon—he did not want them looking at his mate’s naked body.

That was for Raen’s eyes only.

So far, they had seen no one, but the dragon never stopped raking his eyes across the jagged horizon.

He was searching anxiously for any sign of Kharnath.

That evil bastard of a dragonlord would know by now that his sacrifice was missing. He would have found the broken chains and smelled the scent of human flesh on the empty altar.

He would be one very pissed off stormdragon.

And he would be on the hunt.

Raen was not frightened of Kharnath for his own sake. He would gladly take him on in single combat. But Blair was here with him—his fated mate—and he needed to keep her safe at all costs.

As much as it pained his pride to do so, he would avoid any conflict unless it was totally necessary.

At least until Blair was stashed away some place safe.

The sooner they got what they needed and departed from this place, the better.

At the top of one particularly high hill, there stood a configuration of vertical pillars that had been eroded by eons of weather. Ancient human constructions.

Raen flared his wings and parked himself by these stones.

He lowered one wing to the ground, a ramp for his mate to dismount. Once she was standing on her own two feet again, Raen shifted into his humanoid form.
